It is the story of the birth of independent India, told through the greatest years of the glorious sport – Hockey. When the British Indian hockey team, led by Samrat wins gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, the players become acutely aware that although they won the greatest accolade at the Olympic Gold, the feeling of unabashed joy was greatly hindered by the fact that their country is colonised. Tapan an assistant manager makes an unspoken vow to return to the arena and win as a free man.
The years that follow, India goes through upheaval and turmoil and as the world gets plunged into the Second World War, it temporarily casts a darkness in the world that leads to two consecutive Olympics being called off. Finally, the 1948 Olympics are announced. Doubled with Indian Independence the stage is set for Tapan Das, now a joint manager in the team to make good a promise, he made to himself and Samrat. Tapan battles his inner demons and every challenge before him to put together a team worthy of winning India’s first Gold medal as a free country.
